FAQ regarding Coronavirus and Travel Insurance

Is it too late to buy trip cancellation & interruption insurance for my upcoming trip due to the Coronavirus?

You can still purchase trip cancellation & interruption insurance for your trip, however your coverage may be affected, depending on your insurance provider and if travel advisories are already in place for your destination. Certain insurance providers have declared that Coronavirus is a known event and policies purchased after a certain date will not cover any losses occurring from such. We advise that you refer to the insurance provider’s website to understand their stance on this topic.

What if the airline cancels my flight due to the Coronavirus?

Please review your policy to confirm if this is a covered benefit. Benefits may be available to provide coverage for a new flight to get you to your destination or home or may be available to allow you to cancel your trip. Possible coverage would only be available for insured travel arrangements. Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) may be applied to this situation, if this benefit is available under the policy you have purchased. Review your policy for further details.

I’m at destination and cannot fly home on my return date due to Coronavirus. Does my travel insurance cover any of the extra expenses?

In many cases your travel insurance may offer coverage for any extra hotel and transportation costs you incur up to the policy maximum if you aren’t able to travel home on your scheduled return date, however coverage will be dependent on advisories issued prior to departure to destination and restrictions by insurance providers.

What happens if I am quarantined due to Coronavirus while on a trip?

Trip interruptions coverage may be available depending on the policy you have purchased, and any travel advisories that were imposed prior to your departure to destination. Specified quarantine risks are available under certain policies.

What if I contract Coronavirus prior to my trip?

If you contract Coronavirus prior to your departure, you would be covered for trip cancellation if there is a confirmed diagnosis, including proof of illness from your doctor that states you are medically unable to travel at the time of departure, provided your coverage was in place prior to contracting the illness.

What if I contract Coronavirus during my trip?

If you become ill with the Coronavirus while on an insured trip, you would be covered for medical expenses and trip interruption benefits, if there is a confirmed diagnosis, including proof of illness from a doctor, and your policy includes both medical and non-medical coverage. These coverages are subject to the terms and conditions of your insurance policy, including any travel advisories that were issued for your destination prior to your departure and restrictions by insurance providers.

I have made a claim. Will my insurance premium be refunded?

If a claim has been made on the policy, insurance premiums are not eligible for refunds.

I have received a full refund for all my travel arrangements, can my insurance premium be refunded?

Please contact your sales provider to inquire if a refund is available. Please be advised that policies with trip cancellation coverage are non-refundable.
